Avoid harvesting in the first 2 years to allow plants to put energy into developing the crowns, new spears will start thin and will thicken each year for the first few years. In third season cut ferns back in winter and harvest thicker stems as they then appear and reach around 15cm in length. Spears can grow quickly on warm days and may need harvesting daily. Harvest for up to 12 weeks and then leave spears to go to fern.
